

On the day amniotic rain falls, babies are born from great membrane sacs. The state assigns numbers to its human resources, classifies them, and eliminates those it deems unnecessary.
A detention facility. Footsteps. Blackout. A gunshot.
Then: an old hand, motionless on a cold floor.
The rain falls again. The membrane opens. Not a baby — an elder.
