It’s Not a Monster

Eight-year-old kid Toby lives in a small orphanage run by the loving Mrs. Hannah, who is like a mother to him. As other children are adopted, Toby refuses to leave, believing the orphanage is his home. At the beginning of the story, Toby plays a prank to drive away a couple who wants to adopt him. While he goes to apologize to Mrs.Hannah, he mistakenly heard the talk between Austin and Mrs. Hannah. Toby misunderstands that Mrs.Hannah’s illness is a terrible monster. Determined to save her, Toby makes a series of plans. He steals Hannah’s medical report but, gives it to Mr.Thomson to know what is the ‘monster’, sells his cards to get money, and asks Mr.Thomson to buy weapons for him to fight the ‘monster.’ Finally, on this day, while Toby is playing with his sword and sparring with Grandma, she suddenly collapses. The doctors rush to save her, but this time, it is already too late. Lying in her own bed, Grandma says her final goodbye to Toby before passing away not long after. Before she goes, she entrusts Austin with the responsibility of taking care of Toby. Toby attends her funeral. In that moment, he truly grows up. In the end, Austin becomes Toby’s adoptive father. Toby remains as playful and mischievous as ever, full of innocence and laughter. But deep down, we know—the once childish Toby has finally grown up.
