2025 Annual Awards Interviews: Chuming Wei & Zhe Li, Director and Writer of “Bunny’s Family”

Join host Olivia Lyle (@olivialyle1) for an exclusive interview with director Chuming Wei and writer Zhe Li of Bunny’s Family (USA), nominated for Best Mystery Short of 2025 at the IndieX Film Fest Annual Awards. Captured by Kyle Reed (@thekylereed) at the film’s California premiere held at Regal LA Live, Los Angeles, the conversation explores the unsettling and visually rich world of this standout genre short.

In Bunny’s Family, all the characters are rabbits—siblings Isabel and Leo discover that their parents, both scientists, have been using black magic to manipulate their lives. As they come to terms with the fact that they were artificially created as part of a disturbing experiment to engineer perfect, obedient children, they decide to rebel in a desperate attempt to preserve their autonomy and sense of identity.

Wei and Li deliver a bold, stylized mystery that blends allegory, horror, and family drama through striking character design and an emotionally charged narrative.

Watch the interview, and teaser, below for insight into the film’s visual symbolism, its commentary on control within family structures, and how Bunny’s Family uses its rabbit characters to explore deeply human fears.
