A 13-year-old girl called Rose discovers a message in a bottle on the shoreline of the Thames. The message is from a woman called Hannah, and its discovery takes Rose on an adventure to Tower Bridge to uncover the mysterious woman’s identity. Without a place to sleep for the night, the spirit of Hannah guides Rose to the top tower of the bridge where she finds a forgotten attic that served as Hannah’s secret greenhouse. Over a long night spent on Tower Bridge, Rose learns of Hannah’s passion for horticulture and witnesses how Hannah would make music with the Bridge by creating ingenious musical instruments that would help her plants grow. She also discovers the positive effect that her music has on the Bridge in transforming the crossing into an abundant garden. Tower Bridge’s intricate ‘bascule’ mechanism (which opens and closes for tall ships) becomes a metaphor for time and the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Rose is awakened to the urgency of Hannah’s return and why her concerns will affect us all.
